When 899 Movies first launched, it took its name from the fact that it cost $8.99 per month. It was a direct shot across the bow of Videobox. Sir Rodney at the time hailed it a new “best value” on the adult web. While 899 Movies continues to take direct aim at Videobox with its ever growing library and nifty new features, Sir Rodney is disappointed that the monthly price has risen to $24.95, which now stands at ten dollars more than Videobox. 899 Movies is still a decent value, just not the best anymore.
The movies are all recent DVD releases from top producers like Devil's Film, Digital Playground, Legend, and Pink Visual. Typically the scenes feature popular new starlitas like Cherry Poppens, Taylor Rain, Monica Sweetheart, Katja Kassin, Shy Love, Sativa Rose, etc., in established series like Anal University, MILF Money, MILTF, and Screw My Wife Please. Most of the material is gonzo, which refers to relatively lower budget documentary-style shooting, without elaborate sets or plots, and organized into thematically related "vignettes," or scenes. In this sense, the number of scenes in the collection (15,407) is more relevant than the number of movies (3,296).
The webmasters told us that they add 5 DVD titles a day (which translates into roughly 125 scenes per week). 899movies has made extraordinary progress, but did fall a bit shy if its goal to have over 4,000 DVDs available by February 2008, which would equal the libraries of the biggest download sites, who license most of the same material from the same producers. If you are relatively new to the adult web, this should not be a drawback for you, but there's a good chance recent subscribers to other video download sites will have seen many of these movies elsewhere.
With a database this big, and growing, organization and download speed (in addition to price) are critical differentiating factors. The good news is download speed is FAST. The highest quality version of each scene downloaded in less than five minutes. The site also provides a neat little download editor that allows users to choose a starting and ending frame for download, so you can save the all-important money shot but not all the other chit chat. Importantly, this reduces the size of download, and therefore makes downloading even faster. The site has no download limits and, best of all, there is NO DRM software attached to the movies. Once you download them, they're yours to keep forever, even after you jettison your subscription to the site. Of course, there is also a streaming option.
Organization, search, and preview of downloads are the weak parts of the site right now. 899 allows users to search for movies by genre (e.g. anal, Latina, MILF, etc.) or by studio but unfortunately there is no list of performers or series titles yet. And forget about keyword search. When you do find a scene you think you want to download, there is very little preview material other than a few thumbnail-size screen captures. Likewise, we would have liked a prose description, or reader comments, beyond the studio summary copy. There is a "top picks" button but the DVD titles presented here lack editorial or user comments, too, so we don't ever find out why, exactly, they are "picked." That's a little sloppy and lazy. In general, despite the nifty widgets and growing library, the site has an automated, budget feel to it.
Like the other adult dvd download sites that use this same material, 899movies is especially strong in the MILF category. Amateur, Anal, Shemale and Busty/Big Boobs categories are also strongly represented.
899 Movies is no longer cheap. While the size of the library has tripled, three times the movies should not cost three times the price for membership, especially in such a competitive space. Sir Rodney openly wondered if this crazy cheap price point would be sustained in his last review of the site, and I guess we now know. Sigh.
899 Movies will still cause monkeys to be spanked the world over, just not as many as before, we fear.

Every now and then the site kind of freezes up for a minute, but this is not consistent. BUT no updates since 2-11-07. Any ideas Rodney on what gives with this?? -

My wife and have watched at least 5 movies in the last week and from all different categories - have not had any problems with the quality of the movies. They download faster then any site i've been on and the variety of movies is far better then i've seen in a long time. I contacted the site and inquired on the missing updates and they said they will be back updating within a week. They were upgrading servers to make the site even faster! So for everyone to was concerned about joining - Don't be, this is a great deal and i highly recommend it. -

2007-03-17 00:00:00I joined this sight[899movies] 3-15-07. Found only 1 or 2 movies that were clear enough to see.I have latest computer and comcast hi speed. There latest update was 2-10-07-not 5 a day. I cancelled today 3-17-07. Poor quality and no new movies.Did you say $ back??

2007-03-14 00:00:00I bit on this one and feel a little slighted. While Videobox is $6.00 more per month there is really no comparison to the size of their database and the quality of their clips over 899 movies. The resolution of most videos on the Videobox site is about twice what you are getting here. 899 movies faq states you can burn these to DVD and enjoy them on your television. At the 480X352 resolution of the video clips I've downloaded thus far you would be hard pressed to get much enjoyment out anything you burn to DVD even on an older television. Download speed is more than satisfactory. Aside from the lower resolution and only offering videos from lesser known studios, this has something to offer if you just can't pony up those extra $6.00 for a Videobox subscription. -

Now I can log on but can't download anything--"file not found" every time I select a clip. I'd be careful of this one for awhile. I suspect they're scrambling around. -
