Vintage Taboo traces the evolution of porn from roughly the time the motion picture was invented through the 1970s. The site is a treasure of both serious information and some good laughs--we've cum a long way baby! If you're looking to get off, you're likely to be very disappointed. If, on the other hand, you are truly curious about the history of porn, then this erotic museum is a worthwhile and educational experience.
The site is obviously a labor of love, and we do mean labor, as it must have taken a tremendous amount of time and effort to assemble this collection. Sir Rodney found it fascinating to view these erotic artifacts. Some films are nearly 100 years old--wowser! You may be interested to learn that people in your great-grandparents generation were just as perverted as we are today, as the pre-1920 pee fetish and spanking movies will confirm. There are now about 300 downloadable Quicktime movies, dating from 1910-1975, with the greatest concentration coming from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. We were disappointed not to see such historically important films such as Deep Throat or Behind The Green Door here, but, as the webmasters update the site five times per week with new material, it may not be long before those are added.
Vintage Taboo is well indexed, listing material by decade or special topic, such as movies, stars, illustrations, and so on. We were impressed by the collection of covers of famous skin magazines published in the twentieth century, but were surprised not to see famous pioneers Playboy and Hustler. Likewise, the 'Stars' section, which has grown considerably since our last visit, presents luminaries of yesteryear Candy Barr and Lili St. Cyr, and even one short John Holmes scene, but is still a bit shy of what we'd consider to be a classic porn Hall of Fame. The galleries contain thousands of photos which are, considering their age, of excellent quality. You can also peruse some vintage French postcards, illustrations, and photos of topless 'native girls' taken in Africa and other third-world areas dating back to the late 1800s--perhaps those are the ones National Geographic magazine never published!
The trial provides full access, but the webmasters, with their constant additions to the collection hope you'll choose to stick around for a lot longer. For true students of porn, there is much to appreciate and admire.
